Satoshi Kuribayashi

−Biological ecology photographer−

Born in 1939 in China.

A Self-Defense Force personnel, he studied photography at a trade school while working as an insurance company employee. From 1969 he became a freelance photographer. He moved to Nagasaki Prefecture in 1977 and focused his energies on photography centered around insects. With his original device, the insect snap camera, he focused on close-up photography of ants and other small insects. Afterwards he developed–one-by-one–a photography system using sensors, a high-speed strobe at 1/50,000th of a second, and a camera for extreme depth of field in macro photography. He continued to be the only ecological photographer for over 40 years.

In 1978 he won the Photographic Society of Japan’s Rookie of the Year Award and the Ina Nobuo Award in 1979. In 2006 he was awarded the Lennart Nilsson Award, known as the Nobel prize for scientific photography, and also the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2008.
